Hi there,
My name is Ian Usher. I was born in 1963 in Darlington Memorial Hospital, in the north east of England, and had a very happy childhood
growing up in the small market town of Barnard Castle.
After school I took a year off, and travelled to Israel to work on a kibbutz, and eventually headed home via Egypt and much of Europe.
I went to college in Liverpool where I did a Bachelor of Education degree, specialising in teaching Outdoor Education.
This led on to working in outdoor centres all over the UK and in Europe. After working for British Rail for a couple of years as a trainer
of their youth trainees, I became a self-employed trainer/facillitator. To supplement my income I also did a bit of buying and selling
of cars and motorbikes.
After a couple of years of varying success I went into partnership with my good friend Bruce, and we set up Scarborough Jet Skiing on the coast.
We ran this for five summer seasons, and when I look back, I reckon we had a pretty amazing time, filled with lots of hard work, but just as much
fun and laughter. In the winter months we ran all sorts of other businesses. We published magazines, ran a couple of wedding cars,
I worked for British Coal Enterprise as a job placement counsellor, and did a bit of work as a kitchen fitter, among various other things.
When we sold the jet ski business I set up a cycle hire business, and the year after that worked as assistant manager at Atlantis,
the big outdoor swimming pool in Scarborough.
It was at this time that I first visited Australia with my partner Laura, and after a second trip down under a year later we decided to move
there to live.
We married in 2000, and at the end of 2001, we sold pretty much everything we owned and moved to Perth in Western Australia to start a new life.
And this is where I am now, six years later.
